M.A. in Global Studies

General Information

The M.A. degree in Global Studies (GS) is a one-year Masters program. It is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students with the fundamentals of contemporary international issues, as well as detailed knowledge about particular world regions. The M.A. degree in Global Studies provides students with wide flexibility in crafting an individual program, and is appropriate for students who plan to pursue careers in a wide variety of fields. Students can tailor the content of their programs within a defined framework to help them pursue specific career goals. Courses are selected in consultation with a faculty adviser.

M.A. Requirements 

First, students must complete a minimum of 24 units of coursework, of which at least 12 units must be graduate-level coursework (course numbered 200-299). The coursework must include:

  • Two Global Studies M.A. seminars -  one in the fall semester and one in the spring semester. 

  • At least two social science courses (minimum of 3 units each).

  • At least two area studies courses focused on the student’s choice of world region (Africa, Asia, Global North, Latin America, or Middle East; minimum of 3 units each). One of the area studies courses must be a regional survey course.

No more than one-third of all units taken for the M.A. may be taken on a  Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory or Pass/No Pass basis.

Second, students must complete a capstone project (40-50 pages) over two semesters in the Global Studies M.A. seminar. The capstone integrates coursework and independent research within the student’s regional concentration.
