Minor in Global Studies

Overview

The minor in Global Studies provides an opportunity to study one of five regions of the world within the context of Globalization:

  • Europe and Russia
  • Africa, North and Sub-Saharan
  • the Americas
  • Middle East and North Africa
  • Asia

Requirements for the Minor in Global Studies

(consists of five upper-division courses)

Upper Division

Five courses at UC Berkeley (or their equivalents), to include:

  • One Disciplinary Course, selected from the Disciplinary Course List (Appendices A1-A3 of the Major Handbook).
  • One Geographic Focus Course in your region. Choose one from the following: 
    • Europe and Russia - GS 110E
    • Africa, North and Sub-Saharan - GS 110K
    • the Americas - GS 110L
    • Middle East and North Africa - GS 110M
    • Asia - GS 110Q
  • Three courses that align with your chosen region. Courses can be selected from Appendices B1-B3 of the Major Handbook. These courses must be from the same region.

Foreign Language

While not a requirement, Global Studies minors are strongly encouraged to complete coursework in a modern language other than English.


Eligibility to Declare the Minor

You are eligible to declare the Global Studies minor if you have met ALL of the following criteria: 

  1. Completion of the Minor Application Form.
  2. Completion of at least one minor requirement course taken at UC Berkeley with a grade of B or better OR completion of at least two minor requirement courses (not necessarily taken at UC Berkeley) with a minimum 2.0 GPA.
  3. Not be in the final semester of undergraduate work.

Completed applications are accepted during fall and spring semesters beginning the third week of instruction and through the last day of RRR week (not the last day of finals). During the summer, applications are accepted from early June to mid-August. Check the Global Studies website for semester-specific dates of application acceptance.


Policies Regarding the Minor

  • No more than two courses may be taken from the same department.
  • All courses counting for the minor must be taken for a letter grade.
  • A minimum of three courses must be taken at UC Berkeley. All transfer courses must be approved by an advisor.
  • GLOBAL 197, 198 and 199 cannot be used to fulfill minor requirements.
  • A minimum GPA of 2.0 must be achieved in all coursework used to satisfy the minor requirements.
  • Only one course can count for both a major and a minor.
  • Once a student has entered their last semester of coursework for the minor they should submit the the Completion of L&S Minor Form, signed by the student and the major advisor.
